October 2006

Here's what we've been up to this month

Hi everyone its been a very busy and exciting month here in Pidley. We decided to build a pond, so the JCB was called in thanks to Jackies brother David, and the hole was dug. Thanks to all the rain we had it didn't take long to fill up.

We wanted to have some ducks to put on it, and after meeting Shane and Emma at the Autumn show, we are now incubating 6 Indian runner eggs. Hopefully these should hatch out next weekend. We're going to try to candle them to see if they are developing. Watch out next month for more news......

When we visited Shane and Emma's smallholding we also came home with a young man to join our Ladies.......Jerry the Gold Laced Orpington has settled in well and enjoying the company of a harem of clucking hens. We're now planning to get some pure breed hens to join him and start breeding our own Gold Laced Orpingtons.

This month we've also been making and tasting lots of home made and home grown produce.

Jackie has been busy making a green tomato chutney which is now maturing and should be ready around the end of the year.

Thanks to Dale and Karen we are now in the process of making our own wine from a bumper crop of red grapes. It's our first time in making wine and have consulted many books and our family wine guru Ray. We're planning to make some more wine which we hope might be ready for Christmas.

Our first lot of pigs went for pork, but we have been keen to try bacon from our own pigs. With a recipe from Shane we have had our first attempt at home cured bacon. We used a dry cure mix on some belly pork and after a week of tender loving care we were able to have a fantastic breakfast last Saturday of home made streaky bacon and fresh eggs...........Blooming tasty.......

We've been having quite a bit of pork over the recent months so to vary the diet we decided it was time our two surplus Cockerels got the chop. Julian did the ringing of the neck business and Jackie, with the help of Annette and Joy, did the gory job of preparing them for the oven. The cockerels had been fed on corn and grass and were very very tasty. We're planning on breeding some more table birds, so if you fancy a fresh chicken let me know.

Jobs for next month include extening the pig run as we've got quite a bit of land which is overgrown with weeds. The idea is that we let the pigs eat the weeds, dig up the land, which they do very well, and in the process manure it too ready for planting in the spring.

We've also got a greenhouse to move from Jackie's Dad's house, and Julian is planning to go shooting for rabbits........(no elmer fudd jokes please)
